I have been watching War Hipster tutorials, especially the Blood Angels videos.

Prime with Grey Seer. Apply Baal Red. Deepen with Blood Angels Red and Contrast Medium. Pick out the black joints and weapons. Shade the metallics. Clean up with Mephiston Red. Highlight with Evil Sunz Scarlet and Fire Dragon Bright. Sounds good.

But I can feel the tutorial becoming a way to delay the actual work. One more video before I paint. One more scheme before I commit.

The online tutorial is the doorway into the physical practice. It also hovers over the practice as a standard. It teaches, then judges. Or maybe I invite it to judge. The video says, “Here is one way to paint a miniature.” My anxious brain hears, “Here is the way a competent person would have done it.”

The sensible rule in my notes is simple: one main recipe video, one technique video, then paint.

No one needs a media diet for painting small space vampires. Apparently I do.

The next video will not paint the model. I have checked. More than once.
