Salons and coffee houses had friction built in. Disagreement. Rebuttal. Someone else in the room. You had to defend the claim in public, which is different from polishing it alone.

An interface could provide some of that resistance: a “show strongest objection” button beside an answer, a claim-and-evidence split view, or a delayed-send option for high-stakes outputs.

Friction belongs where judgment matters: evaluating a policy claim, for example, or asking a machine to assess an argument. It is less useful when formatting a date or drafting a routine email.
